Northern Spy Cider | Visual Identity
(2024) Northern Spy Cider House is a family orchard nestled between the hills of Canisteo Valley and the meandering Canisteo River. The apples are grown with little to no intervention, hand picked and pressed during their annual fall harvest fest, a communal and raucous gathering with friends and family.
The visual identity begins from the history of three worlds - an imperfect apple with unknown beginnings, a cold war rife with propaganda and a river valley with a rough and tumble past - unifying as one. Graphic elements are a squad of nostalgic block prints from a bygone era and used as flourishes hinting at a mischievous and playful personality. For the marks we leaned into the hand-done route, showcasing rough edges, a nod to the apples blemishes and the hands-on approach of the cider house. The identity is built around a strong sense of storytelling rooted in the past and grounded in the present.
